University of Miami Online High School Student Wins Junior Doubles at Wimbledon WESTON, Fla., July 12 /PRNewswire/ — When Jesse Levine turns in his “What I Did This Summer” essay to his high school journalism teacher, it’s bound to impress. The rising Boca Raton tennis star won the Wimbledon Junior Doubles Championship earlier this month at the All England Lawn Tennis Club. Jesse, 17, is a senior at the University of Miami Online High School. “His journalism teacher had been trying to reach him while he was at Wimbledon,” explains Jesse’s mom, Brenda Levine. “Once we got her messages and called her back with the news, she was very excited. She said, ‘Well, I guess I can give him another week [to complete the assignment]!'” Jesse and his doubles partner Michael Shabaz earned their first Grand Slam title July 3 in a 6-4, 6-1 victory over Samuel Groth of Australia and Andrew Kennaugh of Britain. The epitome of “student-athlete,” Jesse has maintained nearly straight-As since he enrolled in the rigorous UMOHS program in the middle of his sophomore year. At the time, the Boca Raton resident was studying at a traditional brick-and-mortar high school, Boca Prep, while training at the Evert Tennis Academy. “But that wasn’t going over well,” his mom explains. The tournament circuit involves a lot of travel. “He would come back and find that he was behind in his schoolwork, and it was stressful for him.” Fortunately, Brenda Levine says, the Evert Academy established a relationship with UMOHS soon after Jesse enrolled at Evert. “Our school is designed for students like Jesse who are athletes – or artists and performers, or for students who just want an elite education,” explains UMOHS principal Howard Liebman. “These are kids with an interest in pursuing an accredited college preparatory curriculum to obtain a high school diploma, but they need the flexibility of online education to make it work.” UMOHS is fully accredited by SACS (Southern Association of Colleges and Schools) and CITA (Commission on International & Trans-Regional Accreditation). “My husband and I believe that school is very important,” Brenda Levine says. “That’s why we chose Miami Online,” she adds. “There are other online schools, but UMOHS is for real. The course work is difficult.” So if Jesse opts for college, he could be eligible for scholarships not just for his tennis, but for his academics as well.
