To get publicity in the busy run-up to the holiday season, public relations firms have be prepared. By August, I had already received emails and press releases from PR representatives at Nextel and Epson regarding holiday gift guide stories. The email I received from Nextel makes a good template for public relations departments prepping holiday gift guide pitches and press releases:
I know it may seem a bit early, but we were just wondering if you were planning any type of Holiday Gift Guide or Tech Gift Roundup for the holidays this season. We are putting together some information that you may find helpful for your planning, and I would like to direct it to you if you are interested.
Please let me know if you have anything planned yet, and if so:
– What is the deadline for submission?
– What is the publication or airdate?
– What are the feature details?
– What are your special needs, such as phones, photos…etc?
As always, if you have any questions, please feel free to call me at (914) XXX-XXXX.
This is an example of a perfect email. It is short, sweet, and to-the-point. And the timing was perfect as well; the business world had basically been dead for the past two weeks in the waning days of summer. My advice for companies and public relations firms looking for holiday-related publicity is to start pitching and prepping those press releases early. Don’t let your competitors beat you to the punch.
