    The public relations industry and the media have always enjoyed a curious relationship. Those in the public relations industry will tell you that the media can’t do its job without PR flacks. Media folk, meanwhile, will suggest that public relations departments are little more than mouthpieces for people who would still speak to the media if the public relations industry never existed.     Four of my best friends in the public relations business have recently started new jobs. Change can be exciting and challenging. No two public relations departments operate in the same manner, even if they have the same corporate parent. People and processes are different, and so are expectations.     When it was released in 2005, the Dreamworks film “Just Like Heaven” got mixed reviews but did pretty well at the box office, debuting at No. 1 with a first week haul of more than $16.4 million.     I recently received a breathless call recently from a former colleague. My friend explained that an entry on Wikipedia concerning his company had been “vandalized” and that the company was scrambling to come up with new copy.     It should have been a slam dunk. I spoke to the reporter for close to 45 minutes. He asked me a dozen questions, and I backed up my answers with solid data. I fired off a message to my boss, letting him know that this killer story about our company would hit newsstands two days later. But the story never ran. And it turned out to be my fault.
