Media Training Can Turn Your Clients and Employees Into PR Experts
Not every client or employee is equipped to deal with the media on an intimate level. When I was a journalist, public relations contacts would sometimes sit in on interviews I conducted with company executives. In most cases, the public relations department was there to lend support — as either a confidant, or a source of additional information. In other cases, however, it was clear that the executive needed his hand held because he could not handle on-the-fly questioning alone. Should Public Relations Dictate Business Practices?
The Vermont Teddy Bear Co., known for its array of themed teddy bears, became the subject of much public scorn when the company began selling a “Crazy For You” bear. The bear came complete with a straitjacket and commitment papers, and it riled advocates for the mentally ill and the governor of Vermont, among others. Under normal circumstances, this story would not be too odd, but the Vermont Teddy Bear Co.’s public relations response was anything but normal. (Read more…)

Is Your Public Relations Job at Risk?
I received some unwelcome news recently. A friend called to say he had been laid off from his position in the corporate communications division of a major company. The company, he said, was cutting back its public relations budget and his job was one of the first to go. PR professionals shouldn’t necessarily be surprised by that news. (Read more…)
