No Woman Is an Island: Young, Independent Woman Discovers Meaning of Self-Reliance and Sharing in New Novel

SARATOGA, Calif., Dec. 11, 2009 — In her new book, “Seeing the Light: A Novel” (published by iUniverse), debut author June Chen follows one young woman’s reckless journey from bitter, blind selfishness to the importance of sacrifice during her 18 years of discovery.

As a tomboy princess, Rhea Kosmo has manifested a fierce sense of independence that seems to have no end. Arrogant and bold as a young adult, she does not believe in handouts. Giving her time, money or energy to anyone other than herself is simply out of the question. In fact, Rhea even goes so far as to tear up her mother’s contribution checks, obstruct her brother’s attempts to donate his car to charity, and discourage her younger brother’s friends from taking advantage of the family’s policy of largesse.

As Rhea reveals about her feelings, “I still remember hearing people say that, ‘You shouldn’t give expensive gifts to anyone you don’t know well.’ How much does it cost? What is its intrinsic value? How long have I known the recipient? These were some of the questions that I found myself asking. I mulled them over carefully. For months on end, I struggled–”

Can she change her self-centered ways and redeem herself for more than a decade’s worth of aggressive egocentricity? And what happens when her younger brother announces to the family that he has enlisted in the military, showing her firsthand that he is willing to place his own life on the line in order to protect his family and country?

Watch as Rhea discovers how her four siblings and all her friends demonstrate the true meaning of generosity in “Seeing the Light.” Learn how a woman can preserve her independence and identity in a world saturated in free lunches and con men. Find out how you can determine your own personal destiny apart from heredity and environment in Chen’s new novel, a book not only packed with graceful prose but realistic scenes that will make even the most stubborn reader “wake up.”
