The Wellness Network Introduces Your NICU Baby

New digital offering provides real-time education and support resources for parents of newborns in the neonatal intensive care unit

NEW YORK, Oct. 3, 2013 /PRNewswire/ — The Wellness Network today announced the launch of Your NICU Baby at the National Association of Neonatal Nurses (NANN) 29th Annual Education Conference in Nashville, TN.  The offering, which is available in both English and Spanish, features a full suite of video-based education, personal stories, insight and support for parents of newborns admitted to the neonatal intensive care unit, or NICU.   Your NICU Baby is a service of The Newborn Channel, the 24/7 in-hospital TV network that has been educating parents for over 20 years.

Your NICU Baby is designed to empower parents with information about medical conditions, tests, and treatments common to pre-term or special needs, full-term babies.  To help parents find their way in the NICU, Your NICU Baby also provides an orientation to staff and technologies common to the NICU environment. "The unique thing about this program is that the content is understandable and appropriate for all parents, regardless of what type of NICU facility their child is in," explains Sue Hall, MD, NICU Medical Director at Stormont-Vail HealthCare in Topeka, KS. "This is an important and much needed tool to help parents develop the skills they need to care for their baby both in the hospital and once they go home. Learning about skin-to-skin bonding, early feeding, and their child's medical needs helps them become active participants in their child's care right at the beginning, and that kind of involvement is critical for good patient outcomes."

Your NICU Baby is available preinstalled on a portable touch-screen tablet for ease-of-use around the NICU and online. The offering features 45 videos shot in Level III NICUs at Baylor All Saints Medical Center; Loma Linda University Medical Center; and UCLA Medical Center. Expert neonatologists, neonatal nurses, lactation consultants, pediatric surgeons, and other specialists explain medical conditions and provide infant care tips in easy-to-understand, accessible language. Also included are inspiring profiles of parents relating their own NICU stories.

In addition to video content, Your NICU Baby offers a catalog of printable worksheets, informative articles, glossaries, and checklists from clinical contributors and members of the Preemie Parent Alliance, a network of NICU parent support organizations across the country.

"Being in the NICU is an overwhelming and often traumatic experience; one that only another parent who has been there can truly understand," notes Keira Sorrells, Director of Operations of the Preemie Parent Alliance. "Our member organizations were honored to contribute helpful resources and feedback for Your NICU Baby to ensure that the parent perspective was included."
