Varsity Tutors Seeking to Add 100 Laid-Off New York City Teachers as Tutors

NEW YORK, Oct. 11, 2012 /PRNewswire/ — Job opportunities continue be scarce for teachers and many don't know where to turn for work – but Varsity Tutors may be just the place to look.

The company is looking to add more than 100 new tutors in the New York City area in the next three to six months. Although the company offers tutoring for a vast array of subjects, including various entrance exams as well as courses covered in elementary through graduate school, the highest demand comes in for Calculus, SHSAT, and MCAT tutoring.

"When we heard all the news about school districts laying off teachers, we knew we could offer many of them meaningful part-time positions," CEO Chuck Cohn says. "We realized we had the opportunity to match these teachers to students seeking tutoring. Thus far, the teachers have made for great tutors."

After its launch five years ago, Varsity Tutors has very quickly grown to become one of the leading tutoring services nationwide. With approximately 1,200 tutors and 60 employees, the company currently operates in 14 of the largest metro areas across the country, including New York. As demand for its services continues to grow considerably, Varsity Tutors is finding a pressing need for hundreds of more tutors, particularly in New York City.

With the economy still stagnating, many are choosing to return to graduate school. At the same time, the undergraduate admissions process has become ever more competitive. These combined factors have led to an increase in the demand for academic subject tutoring as well as test prep. In turn, there is an increased need for high quality tutors in New York.

Varsity Tutors holds extraordinarily high standards for tutors, only accepting those who are able to prove that they are not just experts in their respective subjects but that they can teach them effectively as well. Applicants with perfect SAT scores have been turned down because they couldn't communicate the material effectively.

"We have set some of the industry's toughest standards for our tutors, both academically and personality-wise," says Cohn. "It's one thing to have academic smarts, and another to also be able to communicate well. Possessing vast amounts of knowledge is useless if you can't communicate effectively what you know."

Cohn says these openings are great prospects for teachers in New York City who may have lost their jobs in the recession and would like to get back into the education field and work again.

The company seeks tutors from all educational backgrounds and fields of expertise.  Varsity Tutors is specifically searching for people who demonstrate academic brilliance and have highly communicative personalities, as well as a genuine passion for teaching. Tutors can specialize in test prep (ACT, SAT, SHSAT, ISEE, SSAT, GRE, GMAT, LSAT, MCAT, etc.), math, science, foreign languages, and all related areas ranging from K-12 subjects to college courses.  The company is seeing demand grow the quickest in the test prep areas, particularly SHSAT tutoring.

Applicants interested in tutoring for Varsity Tutors should complete the company's tutoring job application.

About Varsity Tutors:

Varsity Tutors is a national tutoring company with origins in the entrepreneurship program of Washington University in St. Louis, one of the top such programs in the country. CEO Chuck Cohn launched the company while an undergraduate at Washington University in St. Louis and then later bootstrapped the company while working as a venture capitalist at Ascension Health Ventures. When his tutoring company grew to the point where his time and not capital became the primary constraint to the growth, Chuck quit his venture capital job to focus on scaling Varsity Tutors full-time. Since then, the company has grown significantly to 1,200 tutors and over 60 employees. The company hopes to add 800 more tutoring positions this coming school year.
