In 1998, the EU enacted a directive on data protection that would prohibit the transfer of personal data to non-EU nations (including the U.S.) that did not meet the EU standards for protection. Data Integrity – Data must be relevant and reliable for the purpose it was collected.
Access – Individuals must be able to access information held about them, and correct, or delete, it if it is inaccurate.
Enforcement – There must be effective means of enforcing these rules.
The Safe Harbor certification facilitates business transactions without interruption when dealing with the EU. The aim of this certification program is to bridge the difference between the data protection practices of the EU with those of the U.S.
