ALESSANDRIA, Italy, Dec. 2, 2009 — On a rainy night in the heart of an Italian city, a dead man sits haphazardly on a merry-go-round. “The Serpent’s Tracks” (published by iUniverse) by Maurizio Salva will delight readers as they follow a trail of murder and mayhem in this mystery.
Leading the investigation is Commissioner Alberto Ruggeri. From the first corpse discovered at the edge of an immense, recently constructed residential and commercial complex to the subsequent murder of the president of a charitable organization, the investigator must retrace the murderer’s steps to discover the guilty party.
Though his story is entirely fictional, Salva has based the action of this novel in the true-to-life Piazza della Liberta, the heart of the Italian city Alessandria. His use of symbolism to create an analogy between the biblical Garden of Eden and the Piazza forges a connection between the serpent and the murderer, with mankind as the victim. In this way, “The Serpent’s Tracks” can be enjoyed on several levels. The book is not only a straightforward murder mystery but can also be interpreted in a theological context.
No matter what the interpretation, any struggle of good versus evil generally makes for a good story, and that’s certainly the case here. Readers will enjoy unraveling this mystery.
