‘The River Whispers’: A Young Girl Confronts Death, Ghosts and Self-Discovery

WINDSOR, Calif., Dec. 30, 2008 — Life is often challenging for young teens and 13-year-old Evie is no exception. Her life has become a continual struggle since she arrived in the small town of Turnville. Like any other “new kid,” Evie is desperate to fit into her new school. On top of simply being 13, Evie is also grieving over the loss of her beloved grandfather. But Evie’s life has an added wrinkle: she is being followed by a ghost. Pamela Pizzimenti’s debut novel “The River Whispers” (published by AuthorHouse – http://www.authorhouse.com) uses mystery and the supernatural to highlight themes and address issues confronting young adults.

Evie and her mother moved to Turnville when Evie’s mother’s job transferred her in order to keep the small town’s bank from failing. Plagued by first-day jitters, Evie enters her new school determined to make a good impression. Nervously entering her new classroom, she sits behind a boy who is pale and significantly smaller than the other eighth-graders. The pale boy looks astonished to see her, but not half as astonished as Evie when a boy named Johnny enters the room and proceeds to sit on the smaller boy. When the smaller boy disappears as if in a puff of smoke, poor Evie screams, flies back and hits her head. Not the first impression she was hoping to make.

Evie quickly realizes that she is the only one who can see the small, pale boy. He introduces himself as David and tells Evie that he has been dead for two years – she is the only person that has seen or talked to him since his death. Since no one else can see David, no one believes Evie’s story. Evie and David become friends and David tells Evie that he was killed in a hit and run accident two years earlier. The person responsible was never found and David asks Evie if she will help him solve the mystery of his death:

"You were hit by a car?" I asked.
"Yeah, I think that's what happened."
"What do you mean you think so? Don't you know?"
David paused before speaking. "No, not really. It's as if my memory's
been erased, as if someone hypnotized me and I can't remember. All
I really know is that one day I was part of everything and the next day
no one could see me anymore." David lowered his head and tried to
kick a rock on the road, but missed.

“The River Whispers” follows Evie as she attempts to unfold the mystery of her unconventional friend’s death, make new friends and confront her own grief over losing her grandfather. “The River Whispers” will resonate with fans of supernatural stories, regardless of age.
