KITCHENER, Ontario, Dec. 16, 2009 — Danny Quigley realized that he would have to master how to sell life insurance or go back to killing people. This sums up the protagonist in E.J. Russ McDevitt’s novel “The Quigley Alchemy” (published by iUniverse). Under the threat of divorce, Quigley, a trooper in the UK’s elite Special Forces (SAS), takes his discharge and goes to work in financial services. His desire for more leads Quigley on a mission to find business secrets from an insurance executive who has mysteriously disappeared. Quigley embarks on a journey to Ireland to find him.
“The Quigley Alchemy” opens in Kandahar, Afghanistan, then goes to London and then to Sligo, on the West Coast of Ireland. During these travels, Quigley learns how to create a successful business while also ridding himself of a lot of baggage from his past. Author McDevitt could be described as the original Crocodile Dundee due to his adventures, one that included riding in a truck just a few feet away from a live crocodile with only chicken wire separating the two. The author brings his knowledge of dangerous situations to the page and adventurous Danny Quigley must eventually ask himself how much of his old Special Forces skills will he be willing to implement when everything he holds dear is balanced on his decision to honor his new path.
It’s a novel of intrigue, but readers may also wonder why McDevitt dedicated his novel to someone named Neda. While walking with her father on the streets of Tehran, Neda, a beautiful young woman, was killed by a sniper. The author was shocked to see the footage and wanted to make sure Neda was not forgotten – hence the dedication. Without a doubt, there will be more to come from this fascinating man.
