The Green House Effect Will Be Warming Up Newspaper Comics Come Earth Day

CANTON CENTER, Conn., April 17, 2007 — "The Green House," a new comic strip by cartoonists Brad Gilchrist and Peter Menice is hitting the Internet on Earth Day and will be coming to newspapers nationwide this summer.

"Green issues, sustainable living and becoming more conscious of ourselves and our environment are the core of what we’re writing about," explains writer Brad Gilchrist. "I began my cartooning career at nineteen years old writing ‘Jim Henson’s Muppets Comic Strip’ and maybe being so close to Kermit has made me want to become greener as I get older."

With a focus on the environment, "The Green House" features Todd and Pam Green, a young couple learning about how to live greener and more consciously. Other characters include: Wormy (a young, budding superhero), Mantis (a meditating praying mantis) and Link (a John Lennon look-a-like leftist blogging rat).

The Green House web site currently displays three new Green House comics each week. On Earth Day, Sunday, April 22nd, a new feature aimed toward children, "EarthWorm, The World’s Most Down To Earth Superhero," will be joining the online lineup giving something for adults and children to enjoy.

The Green House and EarthWorm can both be found at http://www.greenhousecomics.com

Greener living is the long-term goal of Gilchrist and Menice, who are marketing their comics through Internet subscriptions and through self-syndication to daily and Sunday newspapers, as well as weekly publications. Readers may receive Green House Comics via E-mail three days a week for free, or seven days a week via E-mail for $12 a year. EarthWorm Comics are also available for free or by subscription.

"We’re starting our marketing campaign, appropriately enough on Earth Day," says Menice. "Although we already have over a hundred E-mail subscribers, we’d like to reach more readers on the Internet and in newspapers." Sending out 3,000 sales pieces by April 22nd begins the launch of what the duo hopes will be a long and rewarding career. As the artist behind the two features, Menice sums up his goals: "One intention I have for the strip is to bring environmental issues and concerns into people’s households in a light and funny way. Another is to show perspective. It’s the little changes in life that make the biggest impact over time. The Green House can cover these small moments daily in a lighthearted way. Like a meal in small bites."

Gilchrist adds, "We aren’t trying to preach, teach ‘our way,’ or portray any opinion as right or wrong. What we’re striving to create is something that illustrates the journey we Earthlings are taking. It’s about the learning, the mistakes, the problems and the victories. And the real joy for Peter and me is that we’re doing it with fun, recognizable characters and a sense of humor."

Brad Gilchrist lives in Canton, CT and Peter Menice lives in Albuquerque, NM.
