The ABCs of History - Literally

PALMYRA, N.Y., June 29, 2006 — Out of the thousands of new books published around the world in the year 1830 one stands high above the rest in its impact on the world: the Book of Mormon. In fact, you can count on one hand the number of books from any year with arguably greater historical significance thus far, even though the other texts have had quite a long head start, viz. the Bhagavad-Gita, the Bible, the Koran and the Talmud.

On Saturday, July 1st, 2006 in the Village of Palmyra, Wayne County, the State of New York, USA, a small book publisher by the name of Experience Press will launch an antique letterpress print shop at 239 East Main Street which is the oldest building in Palmyra’s business district. The building dates to at least 1807 and possibly earlier.

At this newly restored historic facility, Experience Press will use a combination of antique and replica printing equipment from the 1800s for active print jobs among which will be full-run re-prints of historically significant books, like the first edition of the Book of Mormon.

Also at the Experience Press print shop anyone can don an apron and experience the magic of printing from the past. In today’s world of computers, laser printers and copy machines, letterpress printing is a fun and educational experience. The Experience Press printers will mentor visitors through a variety of hands-on letterpress printing options including their "build-a-book" program. Build-a-book starts with making paper by hand, printing on that paper and then binding the printed pages into a real book.

"We are providing an opportunity to experience the past," said Jay Linford, chief operating officer of Experience Press. "Being able to walk out with something you printed using the antique printing equipment is the general idea."

The grand ideas at Experience Press keep getting bigger. Experience Press recently announced that they will create what will be recognized as the world’s largest book in accurate scale. Just imagine a real book that is twelve feet tall. To give you a perspective, from the floor to the top of a basketball backboard is about twelve feet. Experience Press plans to take the world’s biggest book to people around the world visiting libraries, museums, campuses and tourist sights. Palmyra is the planned permanent shelving place for the world’s biggest book.

All are invited to enjoy the celebration of "The Experience Press" Grand Opening event. The Mayor of Palmyra, Vicky Daly, will perform a ribbon-cutting ceremony. Entertainment will be provided by Miriam Fackrell, a former Mrs. Utah, accompanied by the Honorable Reverend Richard Crooks.

Experience Press is accepting manuscript submissions of any genre from authors around the world. To contact Experience Press, go to their website at http://www.experiencepress.org or call Public Relations at (801) 604-0800.
