New Study of 650 Organizations Reveals Success Factors During Change

LOVELAND, Colo., March 28, 2012 — Business leaders from 62 countries report the most effective tactics for leading change. Unlike many studies, which report a high failure rate for change programs, Prosci's research over a 14-year period shows that change projects are six times more likely to meet business objectives when organizations effectively manage the people side of change.

"Surprising to some business leaders, success during change is not only possible, it is repeatable with the effective application of change management," explains Jeff Hiatt, Prosci CEO and founder. "The problem is that three quarters of organizations are change saturated and are failing to build change management competency within the organization."

The new 2012 edition of Best Practices in Change Management is the largest and most comprehensive body of knowledge on the market today. Prosci's 2012 report compiles findings from the new 650-participant study with six previous change management studies. In total, the report reveals best practices and lessons learned from 2,600 project leaders and change professionals, uncovering why some changes succeed and others fail.

"Successes and failures of practitioners who are actively managing the people side of change on their own projects provide an invaluable perspective to the unique challenges that we encounter in applying change management in our own organizations," states Allison Seabeck, Prosci Vice President.

Participants in Prosci's research studies share insights on methodology, communications, senior leadership, and resistance management techniques. The newest data covers topics including advice for new practitioners, change management training, tactics for creating effective leadership and use of social media. One in five organizations is using Web 2.0 or social networking tools as part of change management communications.

The report analyzes enterprise-wide change management deployment efforts. "Nearly half of study participants are actively working to deploy change management throughout their organizations," explains Tim Creasey, Prosci Chief Development Officer. "Discussion is growing around how to drive change management wider across the organization. We now have the research-based, holistic and easy-to-use tools to support organizations in their journey towards institutionalizing change management."
