Startup creates custom apps for business and personal use in addition to games, including LavaCat
KANSAS CITY, Mo., Sept. 30, 2013 /PRNewswire/ — Five years after takeoff, the mobile app industry hasn't touched down yet. And won't anytime soon. Every day, four times more smartphones are activated than babies born. App revenue has grown from $1.8 billion in 2010 to an estimated $25 billion just three years later. It is the fastest-growing revenue generator in the history of modern business.

Based in Kansas City, PocketCake was founded in November 2012 as the "next generation mobile app development company," creating apps for gaming, social networking, entertainment and education. It also customizes apps for businesses and personal use.
All app development occurs in-house: PocketCake doesn't outsource. Such a strategy may curb costs, but quality control isn't assured. "From a management standpoint, how can you guarantee the best possible product when your employees aren't in the room with you?" PocketCake General Manager Jim Bassett says. Pinned above the doorway leading to PocketCake's office are the words: "There is no such thing as a finished app." Once an app is released, the company regularly provides free updates and makes it a point to reply individually to comments about the app's performance, whether good or bad. "We want our customers to feel respected, not cheated," he says. "We care about their opinion."
While Bassett supervises PocketCake's game division, Ellis Gorden — PocketCake's founder and CEO — has been overseeing the development of custom apps for businesses. The company currently has clients in the mortgage and real estate industries as well as other businesses, including a temp agency and a company specializing in self-improvement. "We're not in the business of selling templates," Gorden says. "We create fully customized apps." Gorden possesses nearly 50 years of experience starting, expanding and driving businesses. One of Gorden's other businesses, Centranz, has grown from a heavy-duty truck repair service operating out of Gorden's van in 1969 to the global leader in remanufacturing hydraulic transmissions.
On Wednesday, September 25, PocketCake's first game, LavaCat, launched on iOS, Facebook and Ouya. The game has been downloaded more than 50,000 times on Android devices worldwide. It is the first mobile game allowing players to rewind time.
