ST. LOUIS, March 27, 2012 — The First Catholic Slovak Ladies Association (FCSLA) has made a gift of $10,000 to the National Council of the Society of St. Vincent de Paul (SVdP) to help continue the Society's work in providing critical assistance to those in need and living in poverty. FCSLA made the gift to the Society at its 40th national convention in Baltimore, Md.
"The Society truly appreciates the generosity of this gift," said Roger Playwin, SVdP's chief executive officer. "What's most gratifying is the partnership we have with FCSLA, which values our work and shares our mission to help those in need and living in poverty."
The First Catholic Slovak Ladies Association is a fraternal benefit society founded in 1892 in Cleveland, Ohio. FCSLA was formed to address the insurance needs of individuals of Slovak decent. Today, FCSLA has grown to over 425 branches in 47 states and Washington, D.C., representing over 85,000 members and their families. FCSLA and its members are actively involved in the Church, Catholic education, social and civic causes, and providing aid to those in need. The association sponsors over $248,000 in annual scholarships for young members.
The largest social assistance organization in the world, the Society of St. Vincent de Paul (www.svdpusa.org) is a nonprofit Catholic lay organization of approximately 700,000 men and women who voluntarily join together to grow spiritually and offer person-to-person service to the needy and people living in poverty in 142 countries on five continents. With the U.S. headquarters in St. Louis, Mo., membership in the United States totals more than 172,000 in 4,600 communities. Programs include home visits, housing assistance, disaster relief, job training and placement, food pantries, dining halls, clothing, transportation and utility costs, care for the elderly and medicine. Providing more than $595 million in tangible and in-kind services, SVdP serves more than 14 million people in need each year, performs more than 648,000 visits to people in their homes, and delivers more than 7 million service hours to those in need, regardless of race, religion or national origin.
