SEO Enhancements Part 2 - Meta Description - Meta Keywords

How Press Releases Are Search Engine Optimized - Part 2 of 4

These two enhancements are invisible to human visitors (unless they view the source code), so we’re going to take a brief look at the source code of the webpage, the actual characters that the search engines see and record. Worry not, you don’t need to know what all this code means, let’s just take a quick look.

Meta Description

The first is the “meta description” - this is a brief description of the page, which is used by search engines to provide more information, and is sometimes displayed in search engine results.

This description is not visible and exists only in the source code. Click on the thumbnail image for a closer look.

In our new system, the meta description is automatically generated from the first 25 words of the body of the press release.

As you may note, for this particular release, the first 25 words don’t provide much information about the full meaning of the press release.

Like the comments we made in Part 1 regarding the length of the title, it might be wise to edit the first line of your press release so that the first few words are as relevant as possible.

Meta Keywords

The second under-the-hood enhancement is the “meta keyword” list, another “invisible” enhancement which is  used by search engines to help them to understand the content and meaning of the page.

The list you see here is automatically generated from two lists, a combination of tags and categories, which we’ll cover in Part 3.

By using both industry categories along with the more narrowly focused terms obtained with the tags, we produce a more comprehensive list of meaningful keywords for the press release.
