PISCATAWAY, N.J., March 10, 2009 — Scitopia.org, the free, federated search portal created by leading science and engineering societies, has enhanced the site’s utility and convenience with a powerful alerting service. The service makes it simple for researchers to stay up-to-date on articles of interest published in major peer-reviewed journals. Scitopia alerts delivers personalized e-mail alerts about content of interest to users on a frequency they specify.
Scitopia.org’s new alerts feature is a major functional upgrade. Alerts can be created for any term or name, including title or abstract keywords, author names, and author affiliations. Users can also choose to receive alerts from all or selected society publishers, providing a unique multidisciplinary perspective on any research interest. The alerting service is the second major functional upgrade to be added in less than a year. “Smart” clustering debuted in June. “From the outset, an alerting service has been a coveted feature from the research community so we’re particularly excited to be able to offer it,” said Naveen Maddali of IEEE, a charter Scitopia organization. “Our partners are committed to continually enhancing the service, making it more convenient and more comprehensive.”
Scitopia.org’s unique federated search engine, developed by Deep Web Technologies, is designed to accommodate continuously growing content without slowing the search process. Each partner uses a standardized XML gateway to handle search queries, resulting in fast, accurate results. Search efficiency and precision are essential since scitopia.org’s vast content pool now includes 3.5 million documents — primarily peer-reviewed journal content and conference proceedings — spanning 350 years of scholarship. With scitopia.org’s new alerts feature, the most recent and relevant of this content can come to the user’s attention as it is published.
Libraries around the world — including the Library of Congress, Stanford University, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, and libraries in Australia, Ireland and Italy — include links to scitopia.org from their web sites so patrons can use the service.
