Rich Southern History Comes Alive in New Novel

A Georgia Family’s Story to Beat Impossible Odds and Succeed

TAVARES, Fla., May 5, 2009 — Rich with history of those struggling to survive in the South during the 1940′s and 50′s, “The Long Desperate Road” (published by iUniverse) by Willie Cordell, chronicles the hardships of an American family whose binding love prevails over their poverty in the end.

“The Long Desperate Road” is the true life story of Willie and her mother Mary Jane’s determination to raise her children. Having been deserted by her husband and the father of her children, Mary Jane was left to raise her five children alone. With no money, hardly any belongings and no education, she sets out to save her children from an orphanage. Defying all odds by successfully raising five children on her own, Mary Jane sets out to make a new life for her and her growing family.

As Willie grew older, married and began her own life, she carried her mother’s undying determination with her. Enduring a failed marriage, herself, and having to raise her own children, she was still able to juggle a career. True faith in God seemed to be the only constant in Willie’s life as it gave her the guidance and blessing of being the first licensed practical nurse to be employed abroad.

“As she fled with her children, she had only a few pieces of old furniture and a handful of clothes for each of us. She was eight months pregnant with number five, and the oldest child was only six years old. She had not a dime in her pocket. She had no automobile and would not have known how to drive it if she had. She didn’t know exactly where she was taking us or how she would feed us when she got there. She had her children all safely with her, and that is all that mattered at the time. As her life unfolds — while she raises her children to adulthood under impossible odds — her hardship, pain, trials, triumphs, successes, and her unbending faith in God are revealed. She was left to make desperate choices that would have been complicated for one with a college degree, yet she could neither read nor write.”
