Aziz reluctantly agrees to lead a caravan across the treacherous sands of the Empty Quarter at the village merchants, anxious to capitalize on a royal wedding. The journey is as difficult as Aziz predicted and the travelers nearly lose their lives, but for the sudden eruption of water. And it is the water that serves to finance the Kingdom of Aquifia.
Proclaimed unanimously king by the survivors of the near tragedy, Aziz abdicates as soon as possible, turning power over to Sultan, his self-absorbed son, upon the latter's return a military institution in the U.S. which he had been attending. Accompanied by a respected alumnus, King Sultan begins his reign. Foreign businessmen rush to the kingdom, anxious to satisfy the king's every whim—agreeing to build at exorbitant cost the vessel dubbed the boat that would not float, organizing a safari in the bush to include dancing girls for Sultan's pleasure, to recreating a water park for his entertainment as well.
As the Kingdom comes to its demise, Aziz, the once-king, retakes the reins of power from his son, and leads the citizens and businessmen across the desert to safety as a huge sinkhole swallows up what was once the Kingdom of Aquifia.

About the Author
Douglas was born and raised in The Bronx, New York, attended university there where he earned a B.A. in English Literature, and an M.A. in Russian Studies. He served for many years abroad as a CIA case officer, including Beirut in the late 1970's. Later, he was the president of a Saudi-owned international security firm from which experiences he wrote The House of Sand. He has also published three books of poetry, a self-help book on grief, and posts daily meditations on his website. He is currently working on a screenplay adaptation of Ganymede, his first novel, entitled Cedars of Lebanon.
