Quality Home Care Provider Attencia Helps Seniors Avoid Repeat Hospital Visits

Attencia is currently spotlighting the numerous benefits a personal home care provider can provide to seniors recovering from surgery.

NEW YORK, Nov. 5, 2013 /PRNewswire/ — Attencia home care, a division of Americare that specializes in offering seniors and their loved ones a significant amount of input in choosing their health aides, is currently pointing to a recent study from the University of Michigan Medical School to highlight the importance of proper health care following surgery. Published in the September 2013 volume of Health Affairs, the study found that more than 20% of seniors who underwent common surgeries were readmitted to the hospital within the month following the procedure, a number the researchers felt could be significantly lowered with proper post-surgical care.

"The results of the Michigan study underline the importance of proper health care following surgery. We encourage seniors in the New York area who will be undergoing surgery to contact us for assistance. At Attencia, we work closely with each of our clients to help create the perfect match between them and their private home health aide, to ensure that seniors receive the best possible care following any procedures," said Joseph Kleinman, Senior Director of Special Projects at Attencia and Americare CSS.

The study from the University of Michigan pulled data from approximately 4.2 million adults on Medicare who had surgery done on their hearts, hips, backs, colons, or major blood vessels. Slightly more than 17% of those included in the study visited the emergency room within a month of the surgery and an additional 4% had two or more visits. Furthermore, the study found that of those who went to the emergency room, more than half were readmitted to the hospital.

According to Kocher, the primary physician involved in the study, these findings indicate that health care providers can likely improve these rates by working to ensure a seamless transition and a smooth coordination of care for when patients go home. Private home care nursesand home health aides, such as those provided by Attencia, can be a big part of this process. State-certified and fully trained, Attencia's staff members are available to help seniors receive the highest quality care at home and can assist with any necessary post-surgical treatments to reduce the likelihood of complications and additional hospital visits.
