SAN DIEGO, Nov. 17, 2010 — ecoATM, the San Diego start-up known for its commitment to the environment and its innovative kiosks that recycle consumer electronics, has won one of the coveted Best of What's New Awards given by Popular Science each year.

"For 23 years, Popular Science has honored the innovations that surprise and amaze us – those that make a positive impact on our world today and challenge our views of what's possible in the future," said Mark Jannot, Editor-in-chief of Popular Science. "The Best of What's New Award is the magazine's top honor, and the 100 winners – chosen from among thousands of entrants – represent the highest level of achievement in their fields."

"This award is a great honor for ecoATM," said Tom Tullie, ecoATM's Chairman and CEO. "Beyond the technical inventions, ecoATM's innovation is effective because it directly aligns the consumer's financial motive with a mutual environmental motive in a quick, convenient system that benefits consumers and retailers alike."

Popular Science first recognized the potential of ecoATM more than a year ago as an early-stage incubator company of EvoNexus in San Diego and tracked the development through its first launch and then commercial success. EvoNexus, the incubator for early-stage high-tech companies, was begun by San Diego's high-tech industry group CommNexus.

The Popular Science Awards follows last week's announcement that ecoATM was selected as an International CES Innovations 2011 Design and Engineering Award honoree in the Eco-Design and Sustainable Technology product category. (For more information on ecoATM awards, please visit
