SAN JOSE, Calif., Aug. 15, 2013 /PRNewswire/ — A group of 32 coaches, athletes and students will attempt to make history this weekend in Santa Clara, California as they set out to break the GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS™  title for the longest flag football game ever played.

The current record of 24 hours was set by The Mercy Project in College Station, Texas, on April 8th and 9th of 2011.

The record attempt will kick off at the Off the Wall Soccer Complex in Santa Clara at 2:00 PM on Friday, August 16th. The record will be broken at 2:01 PM on Saturday, August, 17th, but organizers are planning to play for at least 52 hours. The game is scheduled to conclude with the final whistle around 6:00pm on Sunday.

Event organizers will pay tribute to the Bay Area's rich and storied football tradition by dividing players into two teams — the 49ers and Raiders. Teams will consist of 16 players each.

The event will benefit Play Flag Football, a Santa Clara County based 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. Proceeds will be used to subsidize their new girls flag football program, provide scholarships for the financially disadvantaged and start leagues in new locations.

"I'm both very excited and very nervous to attempt to break the record," remarked John Mora, one of the players and the Executive Director of Play Flag Football. "It's going to be difficult, but we have a diverse group of players and a lot of community support."

A GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS Adjudicator will be on site to authenticate the record-setting event, and, if the effort is successful, to present a certificate that officially recognizes Play Flag Football as the world record holder.
