CHERRY HILL, N.J., Jan. 23, 2012 — The efforts of the nation's 55,000+ perianesthesia nurses will be recognized February 6-12 during PeriAnesthesia Nurse Awareness Week (PANAW), which is observed the first full week in February throughout the United States.
This year's theme is "PeriAnesthesia Nurses: A Vital Role in Patient Care," and the American Society of PeriAnesthesia Nurses (ASPAN), in conjunction with its forty chartered components, will recognize the extraordinary work its nurses perform throughout the year. This includes caring for patients who require sedation, analgesia, and/or anesthesia for surgery and pain management. Approximately 40 million anesthetics are administered in the U.S. each year.
During PANAW, perianesthesia nurses throughout the country are encouraged to wear and display official PANAW items to increase the public's awareness of their life-sustaining practice. Items may be purchased online at http://www.panaw.com.
ASPAN represents the interests of nurses who practice in preanesthesia and postanesthesia care, outpatient surgery, and pain management settings. Its mission includes producing evidence-based research, promoting education, optimizing patient care, establishing national standards, and serving as an advocate for perianesthesia nurses.
