BLOOMINGTON, Ind., Jan. 30, 2009 — Follow a daughter and her parents through the 1940s and 1950s, as they endure the horrors of war and immigrate to two countries in “Other Places” (published by AuthorHouse), the new memoir from Ria Veeren.
Ria and her mother, Kathe, immigrated to America in 1948, leaving Holland behind, along with Jack, their father and husband. “Other Places” chronicles Ria and Kathe’s experiences in Kansas and intersperses stories of life in America with flashbacks to their life in a small German village during World War II and their return to Holland after the war.
Many of the historical events chronicled in “Other Places” are based on Jack’s diary. He wrote about working in Germany for the Henschel Flugzeugmotoren Bau and becoming an interpreter for the United States army. At the time, Ria and Kathe had moved from Holland to Germany to join Jack. When the war ended, Jack spent several months traveling with the army, and the family returned to Holland in time for Ria to start school. While with the army, Jack met an American lieutenant who offered to sponsor the family to come to America.
After his stint with the army, Ria and Kathe relocated to Kansas and Jack found a new job. His marriage to Kathe was tested when he found himself attracted to another woman, but the marriage endured and the family finally came together again in America.
“Other Places” provides an invaluable account of the experience of being uprooted by war, immigrating to another country, and the trials and tribulations faced by many families during that time in history. Accompanied by numerous photographs and illustrations, Veeren provides a loving tribute to her family’s strength, endurance, and determination in the face of adversity.
