Considered the deadliest and most destructive tropical cyclone of the 2012 Atlantic hurricane season, Hurricane Sandy caused severe damage to buildings and public transportation systems in New York and New Jersey, as well as 285 fatalities in a total of seven countries.

Throughout the storm, Centers for Specialty Care Group NYC rehab centers remained open and operational, continuing to provide quality care in a time of drastic need. Some of CFSCG's facilities are situated in areas which suffered extensive damage from the superstorm. The consortium's Richmond center, located at 91 Tompkins Avenue on Staten Island, continued to accept an influx of patients while maintaining exceptionally high standards of care. As part of its commitment to the local community, Centers' Staten Island facility also provided over 500 beds to refugees left temporarily homeless due to the destruction of the storm, eventually receiving an official visit from Mayor of New York City Michael Bloomberg in recognition of its good deeds.

"We were lucky, that while other centers closed or suspended their service due to the effects of Hurricane Sandy, Centers for Specialty Care was able to offer a safe, secure, and comfortable environment, a home from home for many affected by the storm," said Kenny Rozenberg, CEO of Centers for Specialty Care Group.

Shalom Lerner, Administrator at the University Nursing Home, recounts the aid effort: "While we were spared the wrath that many others suffered from, we tried to reach out and assist those in need. We offered beds to two other nursing facilities that needed to evacuate patients."

Philip Buchsbaum, Administrator at the Brooklyn Center, also recalls charitable deeds: "During Hurricane Sandy, we regularly kept in touch with city and state regulatory agencies, offering our help in any way possible. Since our facility thankfully did not experience any serious disruption, we were able to admit residents from several other facilities ravaged by the storm. Some of those residents continue to reside here, and are grateful we are able to provide the care we do."

Additionally, the 300-bed Richmond center has just recently launched its new Adult Day Healthcare program. A 30-slot Medical Model Health program, this program offers both occupational and recreational therapies, as well as a host of other benefits. The center also provides the services of a dietician who will design a diet sensitive to each patient's medical history and current conditions. Care management assistance is also offered by the center, involving the seamless coordination of doctor referrals and appointments, in addition to transportation to and from doctor appointments throughout all New York City boroughs.

Above all, Centers for Specialty Care Group prides itself on the fostering of a warm and caring atmosphere, sustained through the professionalism and tireless work of its dedicated staff. With over 20 centers conveniently located throughout New York City, upstate New York, and New Jersey, Centers for Specialty Care Group sets the leading standard for care.
