OSPREY, Fla., Feb. 4, 2009 — The newly released book Success in a Challenging World: 24 African American Leaders reveal their secrets for reaching the top reveals 16 secrets for success during challenging times. To maximize readership, authors Corey Crowder and Andrew Neitlich are offering the book free as an ebook before distribution to book stores.
The book provides interviews with 24 successful African American leaders in business, academia, medicine, education, and entertainment.
“Each interview is like a motivational speech with fantastic insights about how to succeed, regardless of circumstances,” said co-author Corey Crowder, who played in the NBA and then 14 years as a professional basketball player in Europe.
Co-author Andrew Neitlich, a Harvard MBA and management consultant, added, “After the interviews, we distill the lessons shared into 16 success principles. We also offer a set of guidelines for organizational looking to hire an authentically diverse workforce.”
Among the findings that were common to the majority of interview subjects:
- Have a positive attitude and unlimited perseverance to achieve your dreams.
- We can always find reasons why we won’t succeed, whether related to racism or any number of other sources; make those reasons background noise.
- Understand your history and then transcend it.
- Develop a unique “brand” that communicates your value to others.
- Never stop learning; education is crucial in this and any economy.
- Build a strong power base or network, including a group of mentors available for advice and support.
- Master the political game of getting ahead in organizations.
- Pay your dues and be ready to make personal sacrifices in order to achieve your aspirations.
- Have a spiritual relationship and faith.
The authors are offering the book free as an ebook download on The Executive Think Tank (http://www.theexecutivethinktank.com), a newly launched site focused on peak performance for leaders.
“We make our living as coaches, consultants, and speakers, and want these ideas to be spread as widely as possible,” said Neitlich. “This book has too many great insights that are applicable to all sorts of leaders, as well as to students who might not be able to afford a 237-page book in this economy.”
