National Law Journal Names Burleson LLP to "Midsize Hot List," Pointing to Firm's Growth and Capabilities

HOUSTON, April 18, 2013 /PRNewswire/ — The National Law Journal has named Burleson LLP to its "Midsize Hot List," focusing on the Houston-based energy law firm's rapid growth since 2009 and the ever-expanding range of capabilities it brings to oil and gas companies.

The Journal chose just 20 firms for the list. In the accompanying feature story, it said the selected firms "in no way are stuck in the shadows cast by their giant competitors" and added that they are defined by a "keen business strategy," "forward-thinking attorneys," and a "better value" proposition for clients.

Managing Partner Rick Burleson said inclusion on the "Midsize Hot List" further underscored Burleson's emergence as a "go-to firm" for oil and gas companies.

"While our geographic footprint has expanded significantly in the past few years, our growth has been about more than just opening new offices," he said. "We have gone into regions where clients have a significant presence, and have either added or strengthened our skills to help them deal with the matters that affect their business. Being in the right places with the right services has made us a go-to firm for the industry."

In the article, the Journal tracks Burleson's expansion into Pittsburgh in 2009, San Antonio in 2010, and Denver in 2011 – all of which were aimed at serving companies with interests in U.S. shale plays – and in Midland, Texas, last year to support drillers in the Permian Basin.

It also said that with growth has come more diversified services, noting that the recent addition of nine lawyers in the Denver office has brought further experience in litigation, mergers and acquisitions, and oil and gas title work.

The Journal quoted client Kevin Cunningham, general counsel for Cabot Oil & Gas, who said Burleson's deep energy industry knowledge was an advantage –especially the firm's understanding of hydraulic fracturing, the process by which oil and gas are extracted from shale.

"They have followed that advancement in technology to other locales and grown their business on top of that resource," Cunningham told the Journal. "I don't know of any other firms that have done that."
