Mitsu Sato Hair Academy Inspires Change Through Annual Moms Makeover Day

Charity benefit instills Greater Kansas City women with more than just a new look; academy announces event for fathers in June

OVERLAND PARK, Kan., Feb. 26, 2009 — The path to change can start with something as simple as a great new hairstyle, affirms Mitsu Sato, owner of Mitsu Sato Hair Academy (M.S.H.A.) (http://www.mitsusatohairacademy.com), a cosmetology school in Overland Park, Kan., that offers the public high-quality hairstyling at affordable prices.

Sato, who recently hosted Moms Makeover Day at his academy, says that in providing area moms with a free day of personal pampering, the school provided much more than image makeovers (see before-and-after shots at end of release). The event, which took place the Sunday before Christmas and will become an annual event for the academy, created a safe place to nurture seedlings of personal change. The women participating in Moms Makeover Day came in for a new look, including hairstyle, makeup and clothing, but left with newfound self-confidence and fresh perspectives on themselves and life. Mitsu Sato also owns and operates a professional salon, and all of the stylists from the salon participated in the event alongside academy students.

"Throughout the course of Moms Makeover Day, our hairstylists and makeup artists from both the academy and salon went to work on more than 60 wonderful women for free," Sato says. "When they came in, you could tell that these ladies needed a day to indulge themselves. They were tired … stressed … overworked, perhaps. They put their children first all the time, which is important – but every now and then, a mother has to step back and recharge, for the benefit of herself and her family. After the makeovers and styling, it was as if someone had watered wilting plants. Many moms walked away feeling confident about themselves for the first time in a very long time."

Moms Makeover Day was the brainchild of two friends, Anna Tarr and Tempe Hardy, who approached Sato with their idea of a charity benefit for mothers. Thrilled with the concept, Sato jumped at the opportunity and agreed to provide not only the event venue but the stylists as well. Organizations like Head Start were contacted to help recruit participants from the Greater Kansas City region. More than 50 volunteers participated to make Moms Makeover Day a success.

"At M.S.H.A., we have an ongoing commitment to giving back to the community," Sato says. "When you have the talent and ability to help, you should, and that's exactly what I am doing and teaching my students to do as well. When we are able to transform someone's personal style for the better, self-esteem soars and often inspires change within. Enabling such experiences is how we give back to our community, and that is a crucial component of the academy's mission and purpose. At M.S.H.A., we are not just about hairstyles or makeovers. We're about hope and change."

To build on the success of the Moms Makeover Day, Mitsu Sato Hair Academy is planning to honor fathers as well. On Sunday, June 14, one week before Father's Day, the academy will host a Father's Day Makeover event. "This event will treat fathers in our community who are dedicated single dads, or simply overworked but unrewarded. This will be their special day, just as the Moms Makeover was for mothers," concluded Sato.
