DANIA BEACH, Fla., Aug. 17, 2009 — Many wonder what goes on in the twisted mind of a convict. The new fiction novel by Barbara Kane, “Torah Betrayed” (published by iUniverse), explores the continuously self-centered thoughts of a sociopath who has no regrets, empathy or conscience and a deceivingly charming and charismatic exterior.
“Torah Betrayed” is the first segment in a three-book series of the sociopathic life of Joseph Levi. Joseph is the black sheep of his widely respected family; he has an insatiable hunger for drama, young men and actions anyone would see as diabolical. Joseph is incarcerated for having a liaison with an unwilling young man from a prominent family. While in prison, Joseph uses sexual games that suit his tastes all too well to meet the “right people” for his master plan of living in and getting out of prison.
Joseph aims to blackmail his brother, Isaac, into giving him $30,000 to buy a candy factory to “pay to get rid of him.” In reality, Isaac is secretly happy to give him the money to get him as far away from the family as possible on one condition: Joseph must marry before the year is over. To Joseph’s surprise, he genuinely falls in love with and marries an old friend, Linda. His love for Linda and their unborn child ignites a desire for him to live a meaningful life and provide for them. Linda and Joseph run into difficulties when the candy factory burns to the ground and Linda barely escapes a hit and run accident. Joseph learns these occurrences are not simply accidents and his disturbing past is finally catching up with him. Kane writes:
“A whole new set of emotions were at play with Joseph. Passion to him had always been a brutal experience. Stimulus-response. Take or be taken. Sex was about control. With Linda, he was a person. Who he was mattered, not what he’d do or what he’d done. But would it last? Would she still care if she knew the details of Morehouse? How would she feel if she got off her cloud and had to deal with him and his craving for young boys? At this moment, Linda was all that mattered. The thought of bedding with anyone other than her wasn’t in his thoughts. He’d have to tell her, for her sake, or would he? Maybe, for her sake, he wouldn’t.”
