As Geoff Humberstone, MHV President, comments: "In complex vacuum systems, good maintenance is vital to keep them running and maximize production. However, when failures occur, you need to be able to trouble-shoot the system in a logical way to isolate and correct problems."

"For example, on a Monday morning you can't pump your workhorse furnace below 40 millitorr. You have helium leak-checked the most obvious spots and there are no leak indications. You have bled in a "puff" of helium into the mechanical pump gas ballast valve port to verify that you are able to see helium in your leak detector. This sort of clears the blower and mechanical pump. Your hunch is an internal water leak and the 40 millitorr you are seeing is the vapor pressure of the ice formed by the leak." Is It The Pump, Blower, Or Furnace?

MHV also wants to enable two-way communication with busy professionals in the industry to share information. For example, MHV will be at the upcoming ASM Heat Treating Conference and EXPO in Indianapolis (Booth 1639) on September 16-18th to talk about the latest developments. Here are samples of some recent articles and tips:

  • Read and Plot Your Vacuum Performance—automatically—to show up issues before they can shut you down.
  • Handy vacuum conversion chart lets you switch Torr to microns or mbar, CFM to l/sec.
  • Tip: Don't run your process cycle until the vacuum pump has reached its operating temperature.
  • Tip: Operate your vacuum pump with the Gas Ballast valve cracked open to keep oil clear.
