'Man Boobs' Can be Eliminated Through Sculpting of the Male Chest, Says Advanced Aesthetics

Atlanta-based cosmetic surgeons helping raise self-esteem of men with gynecomastia, enlarged male breasts

ATLANTA, Dec. 23, 2013 /PRNewswire/ — For many men and teenage boys, removing their shirts at the gym or pool is a painful experience due to gynecomastia, or enlarged male breasts. Plastic surgery to reduce the size of male breasts is one of top surgical procedures for men and rose 5% in 2012, according to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS).

"Men sometimes come to us in their 70s to have this procedure done, after they have finally saved the resources to have the condition corrected. They have had to deal with teasing and negative self-esteem their entire lives," says Dr. Paul Feldman, board certified plastic surgeon. "The impact of gynecomastia on the male psyche is often overlooked."

Enlarged male breasts are common, perhaps affecting between 30 and 50 percent of the male population. It can result from heredity, hormonal changes, disease, drug interactions, or marijuana use. Gynecomastia can appear in one or both breasts and may present itself as excess fatty tissue and/or overdeveloped glandular tissue.

Gynecomastia can be emotionally damaging to teenagers and adults alike because it can make them feel less masculine, resulting in a negative body image. The board certified plastic surgeons at Advanced Aesthetics understand the problems caused by gynecomastia and have developed three approaches for reducing the size of the male breast. The techniques differ based on the age of the male, the shape of the breasts, and the type of tissue present in the enlarged breasts.

  • Liposuction. For adults whose breasts are composed mostly of fat with little excess skin, liposuction can be used to reduce breast size. The chest can be sculpted in this manner through very small incision sites, resulting in minimal scarring.
  • Liposuction with excision of breast tissue. For adolescents with dense glandular breast tissue, a combination approach of surgery and liposuction generally produces the best results. Overdeveloped breast tissue is excised and liposuction is used to reduce the amount of surrounding fat tissue.
  • Excision of breast tissue and skin. If the male breast mound is large and drooping, the chest can be toned through a surgical approach that includes removing both excess skin and breast tissue. The incision patterns depend on the size of the enlarged breasts and the amount of redundant skin present.

Because gynecomastia often has a negative impact on self-esteem, the procedures to correct it can be a boost to well-being and satisfaction. A board certified plastic surgeon can evaluate the nature of the enlarged male breasts and develop a plan to make the chest appear more sculpted and masculine.
