Greenwich Letterpress, Creator of Artisanal Wedding Invitations, Converts to 100% Wind Energy
NEW YORK, Aug. 15, 2007 — When Johannes Gutenberg changed the world by inventing movable type in 1450 his converted wine press needed muscle power to turn the massive wooden screw required to make the first impression. No Carbon Footprint.
Over a half century later two sisters, Amy and Beth Salvini, have added an extraordinary ingredient to their print shop, Greenwich Letterpress, that would make Gutenberg happy. As of June 1, 2007, their three vintage Heidelberg letterpresses are being powered with zero-carbon-emission 100% wind energy.
The two young women can boast of a proud printing pedigree. Their grandfather, Armando Salvini, apprenticed as a 15-year-old printer's devil and later founded Wheal-Grace Corporation in 1949. He was joined by his son and the girls' father, Emil, who became CEO in 1985. Wheal-Grace has grown over the last two decades into a twelve-million-dollar-a-year state-of-the-art advertising and corporate printer.
Amy and Beth both studied fine and graphic art in college and opened Greenwich Letterpress in 2006 to design and produce artisanal letterpress printing – http://www.greenwichletterpress.com . They also operate a gift shop at their West Village location, 39 Christopher Street, New York, NY. Since opening the girls have been featured in a variety of magazines and were listed as the number one new entry in their category in the 2007 Zagat's NYC Shopping Guide. Amy's own wedding invitations will be featured this fall in New York Magazine Weddings. A Greenwich Letterpress wedding book will be available to fine stationers and upscale retail outlets in 2008. They have created a waiting list for the book since hundreds of retailers have requested it to date.
Both Wheal-Grace and Greenwich Letterpress have made environmentally friendly printing their number one priority. In June they converted their print facility in Belleville, NJ to 100% wind energy by replacing their 662,967 kWh annual electricity use with wind power purchased from Midwest wind farms. Greenwich Letterpress is the only letterpress studio that uses no carbon emissions to operate their presses.
