Low-Power Design Site Aids Green Engineering

Design articles, news and advice for engineers creating clean/green devices and systems

AUSTIN, Texas, July 1, 2009 — Off-Chip Communications LLC has launched the online engineering magazine, blog and forum http://www.low-powerdesign.com, a portal catering to the needs of engineers designing green/low-power devices and systems.

“In his keynote address to the Embedded Systems Conference (ESC) in 2007, Al Gore told design engineers that they’re the key to a green future,” said John Donovan, Editor-in-Chief of Low-Power Design. “Smart embedded devices, he challenged them, could have an enormous impact on overall energy consumption – and it was up to them to design them. This site is designed to help engineers do exactly that.”

“While a green future will depend on emerging technologies, in the short term it depends on energy-efficient, low-power design,” continued Donovan. “The U.S. electronics industry needs to make a coordinated attack on power consumption, starting with the design of ultra low-power systems and chips.”

Take a simple example: According to the U.S. Department of Energy, chargers for portable electronics devices (“wall warts”) eat up about 4% of the electricity used by the average U.S. home. Extrapolating to a national scale, that amounts to about 52 billion kilowatt hours, or the energy produced by 26 average-size power plants. Increasing the energy efficiency of wall warts by 50% would have a huge impact on energy consumption and greenhouse gas reduction. And it’s not rocket science, either.

About Low-Power Design

Low-Power Design aims to be “the engineer’s portal for green/low-power design.” Low-Power Design carries in-depth design articles, industry news, product reviews and views from a wide range of electronics industry veterans. News is both staff-written and aggregated from a variety of sources worldwide. Design articles are contributed and are written by engineers for engineers. Everyone is invited to share their views in the Forum.

Low-Power Design was started by John Donovan, assisted by Brian Fuller and Steve Leibson, the ex-Editors-in-Chief of Portable Design, EE Times and EDN, respectively. Between them they have over 75 years experience in the electronics industry in general and the semiconductor industry in particular.
