Love Among Violence: New Novel Showcases the Wide-ranging Spectrum of Human Behavior

BALGA, Western Australia, Nov. 13, 2009 — In author Lawrence Clarke’s fast-paced new novel “Purity in a Dirty World” (published by iUniverse), the characters are as exotic as the settings. The book follows the journeys of two compassionate Americans and their dangerous destiny together.

Though the novel’s protagonists share an ending, their beginnings are far removed. Rose Gilchrist is the daughter of a wealthy Pennsylvanian mine magnate, and David Fitzgerald hails from a working-class neighborhood in Brooklyn. The story begins during Rose and David’s childhoods, though the narrative is centered on the struggles the characters endure while in their 20s and 30s. Rose is a volunteer doctor with the Francophone medical charity group Medecins Sans Frontieres. David is a member of a highly trained covert operation that enters war zones to rescue endangered humanitarian workers.

Rose and David witness the horrors of war, terrorism and genocide before a revolving backdrop of locations, including Haiti, Rwanda and Pakistan. A host of supporting characters add warmth – and color – to their chronicles, and draws readers further into the striking locales.

“Purity in a Dirty World” is both exciting and conscientious. Clarke, who is from Belfast, is no stranger to disruption, conflict, and destruction, and acknowledges an overarching message in his work.

“Violence achieves nothing!” says the author. He adds that he hopes that those who read the book are left “with the courage to do extraordinary things to make the world a better place for our children and grandchildren.”
