Lonely Facebook Users Buying Online Friends

NEW YORK, Aug. 13, 2010 — Even though the Internet has been the most significant tool in bringing humanity closer together, it seems that even it lacks the power to allow some folks to create emotional connections resulting in many Facebook users literally buying online friends.

Social media marketing company uSocial.net launched a service last year whereby businesses could buy "fans" and "friends" on Facebook to increase their potential customer base; however, they're now saying the service had an unforeseen client base who began using it almost immediately.

"Very soon after launching, we found there were a significant number of regular people buying friends on Facebook who didn't seem to be doing this for any real purpose," said uSocial.net's CEO, Leon Hill.

"Rather surprisingly to us, we soon found a large portion of these people were in a situation where they were simply lonely online and wanted more people to talk to," Hill continued. "In short, they were literally buying friends so they had someone with similar interests to make an emotional connection with online."

While this may read like something from a sci-fi novel where humanity has become totally unable to make normal connections, for some, the prospect of buying online friends makes sense.

"Among others, we've had several U.S. military personnel stationed abroad buying friends," said Hill about the kinds of people who use the service.

"When we questioned several of them about their reasons for doing so, one said that it just made him feel like he was living a little more of a normal existence."

Hill finished, "I found that very heart-warming."
