Linguamatics Launches Healthcare Product Suite to Turn Unstructured Electronic Health Record Data into Actionable Patient Insights

Linguamatics Health provides flexible, agile natural language processing for complex patient documentation to drive healthcare analytics, research and patient outcomes

CAMBRIDGE, England and BOSTON, Nov. 18, 2013 /PRNewswire/ — Linguamatics, the leader in natural language processing-based (NLP) text mining and analytics, today announced the launch of Linguamatics Health, a new clinical NLP suite that enables hospitals and research organizations to harness the information contained in unstructured fields of EHRs and patient narratives to drive healthcare analytics, advanced research and improved patient outcomes.

Linguamatics Health provides the technology needed to extract meaningful information from the mass of data located in complex patient documentation such as pathology and radiology reports, physician notes, and discharge reports. The information is then used in data warehouses, predictive models and dashboards to improve hospital efficiency and support Meaningful Use initiatives. The information can also be used to populate clinical annotations for biobanks and provide data for Clinical Trial Management Systems to improve disease understanding and clinical trial recruitment.

"While the rapid adoption of EHRs in recent years has integrated many data silos together, healthcare providers are still faced with a large proportion of their data in unstructured form. To achieve the improvements in hospital efficiency and patient outcomes required to cope with rising costs and an aging patient population, hospitals, payers and other healthcare organizations need to make better use of unstructured text," said Phil Hastings, Senior Vice President, Sales and Marketing, at Linguamatics.

"I2E breaks the mould for clinical NLP: its ability to quickly and easily develop and refine query strategies enables users to get results much faster without needing to be NLP experts, leading to dramatically improved speed to insight. We are filling a major gap in functionality for clinical NLP with a robust, scalable platform that can easily be configured for a wide range of tasks across diverse data sources," said David Milward, Chief Technology Officer, Linguamatics.

Linguamatics Health, includes I2E, the company's commercially proven NLP engine, pre-packaged query strategies and medical ontologies, plus services and training to provide healthcare data analysts and medical personnel with the technology they need to support information extraction, identify care gaps and construct predictive clinical models.

"We are delighted to be releasing our first healthcare-specific product. The application of our market-leading NLP technology in this field is a logical expansion of our dominant position in the life science market and a result of a growing customer base in payers, providers and academic medical centers," added Dr Hastings. "We have developed this product based on our experience working with leading US healthcare organizations with a particular focus on supporting NLP for cancer informatics."
