Leading Interpreting Company’s “Speak Pink” Campaign Now in Nearly 200 Hospitals Nationwide
MONTEREY, Calif., Sept. 29, 2010 — In an effort to elevate breast cancer awareness and prevention amongst medically underserved limited English patients, 1,500 distinctively pink Language Line(R) Phones have been deployed across almost 200 hospitals and healthcare organizations nationwide.
When clients use these pink, quick-dial, dual-handset phones to facilitate three-way communications between medical providers, limited English speaking patients and qualified medical interpreters, proceeds go to support the American Breast Cancer Foundation.
The “Speak Pink” campaign, launched by Language Line Services in 2006, is designed to promote both breast cancer awareness and meaningful discourse regarding cultural awareness and sensitivity toward individuals and families who are affected by this disease and also impacted by the presence of language barriers in the healthcare setting.
Language Line Services President and COO Louis Provenzano noted that volumes of medical research show that language barriers commonly result in delays in service or access to preventive care. In the case of breast cancer, mammograms, clinical breast exams and other early breast cancer detection methods that are essential to reducing the incidences of late-stage breast cancer are often under-utilized by limited English speaking patients.
“Language Line Services’ ‘Speak Pink’ campaign was developed with the express purpose to generate greater awareness among limited English speakers, many of whom are not targeted by traditional cancer prevention campaigns,” said Provenzano. “We are proud of the inroads we’ve made over the last four years and pleased that a growing number of healthcare organizations are partnering with us to champion this cause.”
