KM Systems Group's New Agile Earned Value Management Process

KM Systems Group (KMSG) presents their new Agile Earned Value Management (EVM) for Government Projects methodology during a recent Project Management Institute (PMI) EVM Community of Practice webinar.

WASHINGTON, Jan. 29, 2013 /PRNewswire/ — KM Systems Group (KMSG) www.kmsystemsgroup.com, a leading management consulting firm, introduced its innovative Agile Earned Value Management (EVM) technique at a webinar hosted by the Project Management Institute (PMI) EVM Community of Practice on January 16, 2013. The presentation – available on the company's video library – was delivered to over 300 government and industry attendees, receiving recognition for its practical content and thorough review of the subject matter.

The implementation of Modular (Agile) development methodologies for Information Technology (IT) projects is strongly encouraged by the Federal Office of Management and Budget (OMB) and the Department of Defense. Agile EVM leverages Agile development methods which focus on the rapid delivery of customer requirements and early customer feedback; while utilizing the necessary project controls, ensuring contractual and regulatory compliance, and enabling transparency in regards to the project's cost performance and forecast.

Dave Scott, Managing Director at KMSG, explains, "The OMB and DOD are concerned that the traditional 'Big Bang' approach often takes up to six (6) years to deliver mission critical systems which prove to be ineffective because of changing customer requirements, technology, or stakeholders. Agile development methodologies are a proven approach for rapidly delivering the highest priority customer requirements. By combining Agile with EVM we ensure transparency and accountability without overwhelming development teams."

Agile development metrics effectively monitor technical performance but do not enable the program manager to accurately forecast project costs and monitor large IT programs consisting of multiple Agile projects. EVM is a valuable tool for project management because it combines key metrics for scope, schedule and cost into a single, integrated system, allowing program managers to assess contractor and program progress in an objective manner. In addition to tracking progress, EVM provides an early warning of project performance issues before they significantly impact the project and in time to implement corrective actions.
