Job Seekers Rely on Internet Too Much

WASHINGTON, April 22, 2009 — “The stronger your network, the shorter your job search,” say the authors of a new downloadable product called Job Hunt: 50 Tips. Networking gurus Anne Baber and Lynne Waymon warn that “Job hunters are spending way too much time on the Internet, and not enough time making the face-to-face contacts that will lead them to their next job.” A recent study by career services firm DBM reports that 61% cited networking as the source of their new jobs, while only 6% found jobs through Internet job sites and print ads. ExecuNet reports that 70% of their survey respondents found jobs through networking.

So, with about 2/3 of white-collar jobs found through networking, people looking for work need all the networking smarts they can muster. The 50 bite-sized bits of wisdom in Job Hunt give job hunters the rules and tools for making contact. The Tips help networking novices build their list of contacts and coach the well-connected to get maximum benefit from their network.

Job Hunt: 50 Tips can be purchased as an iPhone app at the Apple store for $2.99 or as a downloadable PDF booklet at http://www.contactscount.com/jobhunt.html for just $3.99.

The Tips include:

  • Reach Back to People You’ve Lost Touch With
  • What to Do and Say in the 6 Kinds of Networking Relationships
  • Avoid the “Ho-Hum” Conversation
  • Get Ready for a Networking Event

There’s even a “script” for a stay-in-touch call and cautions to help you avoid “networking turn-offs.”

Each Tip includes a page number, so job seekers can find additional information on the topic in Baber and Waymon’s book, Make Your Contacts Count: Networking Know-How for Business and Career Success (American Management Association, 2nd edition). For those anticipating a possible layoff, the FireProof Your Career ToolKit (a 5-part strategy to be eager to stay AND prepared to go) would be preferred, see http://www.FireProofYourCareer.com. It includes 5 print booklets and links to 5 audio lessons. A CD called Networking Know-How is also available for learning specific basic networking skills.

Baber and Waymon are co-founders of Contacts Count and co-authors of 7 books on business networking. Contacts Count is the nationwide training and consulting firm that specializes in teaching business and professional networking to clients like Deloitte, Lockheed Martin, Corning, Kraft Foods, Georgetown University, and the U.S. Senate.
