‘J-Management’: Fresh Perspectives on the Japanese Firm in the 21st Century

TOKYO, July 9, 2009 — After its economic crisis in the 1990s, Japanese management implemented many changes to get the country back on track. “J-Management” (published by iUniverse) by Parissa Haghirian offers a look at how these cultural, social, demographic, structural, and economic changes are guiding Japanese management in the 21st century.

From the early years after World War II to the management practices that eventually led to Japan’s recession to the many facets of Japanese life that changed during and after the crisis, “J-Management” is an insightful read for anyone interested in international business practices. As one of just a few books written on the subject, it provides valuable information about every way in which Japan and Japanese management changed in response to an economic meltdown and what other countries can learn from their experience.

Written by students at the Sophia University in Tokyo and edited by Haghirian, “J-Management” benefits from many different points of view. The main portion of the book gets into specific management disciplines, including human resources, production management, distribution, marketing, and entrepreneurship. Also included is a discussion of the role of women and a multicultural workforce in the Japanese workplace. The book concludes with a glossary of all Japanese terms used in the book and short biographies of all the authors.
