iUniverse Presents ‘Promises to Keep: The Untold Story of a Family Trapped in War-Torn Italy’

PITTSFIELD, Mass., Oct. 9, 2009 — A father always strives to do better for his family, and the story of Italian family man Domenico Forte is no different. Author Thomas F. Dwyer recounts the true story of his family’s history in “Promises to Keep: The Untold Story of a Family Trapped in War-Torn Italy,” published by iUniverse.

“Promises to Keep” recounts the nearly half-century struggle of the patriarch of the Forte family to move his family to America in search of a better life. Forte spent several decades trying to follow through with his plan only to be thwarted many times along the way. With the start of World War II, Forte found himself having to stay in Italy to fulfill his military obligations. Eventually the fighting trapped the Forte family on the Italian peninsula, forcing them to endure the sometimes-daily horrors of bombings, combat, rape, murder, pillages and more.

When the war finally ended, Forte could no longer allow his family to live in their Italian home. His dreams for success in America clearer than ever, the family moved to the United States. They settled in the Berkshire hills of Western Massachusetts, inspired by its resemblance to the Italian foothills they grew up in.

Dwyer not only shares the story of his family and their pursuit of the American dream, but shares the universal story of one person, against all odds, fighting for a better life for himself and his loved ones.
