The International Board for Certification of Safety Managers (IBFCSM) Offers Qualified Individuals an Opportunity to Earn Their Certified Product Safety Manager (CPSM) Designation

HELENA, Ala., Aug. 1, 2013 /PRNewswire/ — IBFCSM, a nonprofit credentialing organization founded in 1976, offers professionals working in product safety-related areas a chance to earn their Certified Product Safety Manager (CPSM) designation. The CPSM credential was launched in the early 1980s to meet the growing need for a credential in the area of product safety management. Historically, CPSM credential holders came from manufacturing, system safety, human factors science, engineering, government, and consulting organizations. With the growth of a more global economy, the Board recognizes the need to offer the CPSM credential to working product related professionals in the U.S. and around the world. Food safety, medical device safety, and electronic safety remain at the forefront of the growth in the discipline of product safety. The international emphasis placed on product development and manufacturing, export and import requirements, consumer safety regulations, and regulatory standards indicates the need for more credentialed personnel in product safety management.

Over the years, the CPSM program has attracted a high caliber of hazard control leaders who serve in industry, government, and education. Earning the CPSM provides recognition and status to those meeting the education, experience, and examination requirements to be designated as a CPSM. Product safety can be most effectively achieved by using a multi-disciplinary approach that addresses engineering, systems methods, environmental science, behavioral science, ergonomics, human factors, law, economics, and management. In addition to the topics addressed above the CPSM exam focuses on important concepts such as government regulations, voluntary consensus standards, product safety management techniques, hazard control and design processes, hazard analysis techniques, and warranties.

Candidates for certification must document relevant job experience and/or appropriate education. Applicants must complete an on-line formal application and submit two reference evaluations from persons aware of their qualifications. Master Level Candidates must document at least eight (8) years of experience and education combined. Associate Level Candidates must document at least (4) years of experience and education combined. Each Candidate must achieve a passing score on the CPSM Exam which contains 110-125 multiple choice items. The challenging CPSM Exam does not contain test items requiring engineering or math calculations. The exam does contain some test items that require situational analysis, application of knowledge, and critical thinking.

The Board would also like to announce development of a CPSM Self-Study Guide that contains a review of key product safety concepts and principles related to product safety management. IBFCSM does not require Candidates to purchase CPSM self-study materials or attend any product safety seminar before sitting for the formal exam.

IBFCSM also offers certification opportunities in safety and hazard control management or healthcare safety. Those working in general safety, health, and related disciplines may qualify to sit for the Certified Hazard Control Manager (CHCM) credential. Individuals holding the CHCM designation work in a variety of positions in manufacturing, construction, insurance, consulting, transportation, education, private security, and mining. Those working with or in healthcare organizations may qualify to sit for the Certified Healthcare Safety Professional (CHSP) designation.  Individuals holding the CHSP work in a variety of positions including safety, health, infection control, risk management, facility management, engineering, environmental services, and other healthcare related positions.
