Illinois earns an "F" in Nursing Home Care, Ranking 42nd in the Nation

CHICAGO, Sept. 12, 2013 /PRNewswire/ — The following statement was issued today by The Rooth Law Firm:

The state of the nation's nursing homes are horrid. Illinois nursing homes managed only a single passing grade.  The abysmal numbers speak for themselves – 96 percent of Illinois' nursing homes were cited one or more deficiencies and one in four were cited for severe deficiencies.

An obvious problem is the state's mediocre professional nursing staff which was found to severely lack personal attention. The state averaged just 2 hours of direct care per day making it one of the two with the lowest average of direct care staffing hours in the country.

"Illinois nursing homes hired the fewest frontline caregivers in the nation," reports Families for Better Care after publishing each state's nursing home report card.

Robert J. Rooth, an attorney in nursing home abuse law had this to say, "…we are all failing as an entire society when we do not provide elderly residents in need of acute rehabilitation or long-term care with the care and treatment they deserve."

When asked for his thoughts regarding how the state could improve the condition of its nursing homes Mr. Rooth said, "It's a matter of accountability – pure and simple.  When nursing homes neglect or mistreat their residents, they need to be held accountable by government oversight.  We also need to make sure the owners who operate these facilities cannot hide behind the corporate shields of limited liability corporations.

"Illinois legislators must impose a requirement that these owners carry adequate liability insurance coverage to compensate the nursing home residents, or families who have lost loved ones, when injuries or death occur due to neglect or improper care," said Rooth.  "Currently, an interstate carrier can't drive a commercial truck through Illinois without $750,000.00, liability insurance but you can operate a nursing home without a single cent of coverage."
