Hotel Reservation Trends Show Economic Rebound: Beaches & Big Cities Most Popular

LOS ANGELES, July 9, 2013 /PRNewswire/ — HotelMapper.com announced today the results of hotel reservation trends for the first part of 2013. Beach destinations proved most popular, followed by New York and Los Angeles, with European travel and theme park destinations showing a decrease over the last 12 months.  The complete ranking can be seen here: Top Travel Destinations of 2013.

HotelMapper.com is a leading hotel reservations website which maps lodging accommodations worldwide based on rate and location. Hotel Mapper picked apart the results to find out how travel has changed and what this data says about the economy.

Hotel Mapper CTO Dwight Nash noted that last year theme parks and all in one packages were popular, but this year it's big cities and beaches. "Travel is up overall. Based on the first part of 2013, hotel rates are lower than last year and travelers aren't as concerned about all in one deals. Perhaps it's a reflection of a rebounding economy as supply is correcting itself to meet demand. They're starting to put together their own travel itinerary which generally costs more in the end than packaged hotel deals, so this means travelers are less concerned about cost, but at the same time there has been a drop in average nightly hotel rates. Travelers are getting great hotel deals all around." Cities with some of the largest drops in hotel rates since last year include Hotels in Los Angeles and New York, followed by San Diego and Hawaii. Compared with last year's data, bookings for Hotel Deals in Hawaii nearly tripled between January and March which is the high season for travel on the main island of Oahu, HI. "Our data shows the hotel industry has dropped rates overall, and travelers have responded favorably. Could this be a sign of a rebounding economy? We'd like to think so."
