DALLAS, May 21, 2009 — As evident by the recent efforts around the country to legalize gay marriage, many gay couples seek to live an open, authentic life with love and equal partnership like anyone else. The new fiction novel, “Teacher Accused” (published by iUniverse) by Alvin Granowsky, speaks to these real-life struggles and hopes.
In “Teacher Accused,” Glen McLean moves from New York to a small Texas town to become an English teacher and build a life true to his inner needs and feelings as a gay man. He assigns an essay centered on respect and acceptance for all, including homosexuals. With the Texas sodomy law being overturned just the prior year, homophobic hatred explodes in the small town about a homosexual teacher “promoting the gay agenda” in his classroom. To his horror, Glen’s falsely accused of sodomizing Danny Anderson, a 15-year-old effeminate boy who’s bullied at school and that he’s tried to protect. During the story, Glen also falls in love with Keith Chamberlain, a successful lawyer in his town, who’s deeply in the closet and paranoid about being exposed. The following is an excerpt from the scene in which Keith’s mother confronts him about being gay:
“Mom, I’ve lost him [Glen] because of my own stupidity. I was threatened that he might be open about his being gay and that would blow my cover. It would come out that I was gay and-”
“Keith, so what if it came out that you’re gay? So what if some narrow-minded bigots have a problem? It’s your life, not theirs! If you believe you can’t live a full and honest life here, go elsewhere where you can. You have that choice. Being gay doesn’t mean you deserve less than others unless you believe it does. Is that what you believe?”
