Helium Leak Detection … Faster and Simpler Solutions From Metallurgical High Vacuum

A new technical article gives tips on finding leaks in a furnace or chamber and advice on how to avoid getting sidetracked or frustrated

FENNVILLE, Mich., May 24, 2012 — Metallurgical High Vacuum has teamed with the publishers of "Industrial Heating" magazine and released a new technical article that discusses the leak checking techniques developed over the years in a practical "how to" article geared to saving time.

In today's manufacturing environment you can't afford to have a furnace or coating system pump down slowly or not attain working vacuum because of leaks. Worse yet, taking a system offline to troubleshoot means you're not producing products and that hurts your bottom line.

In the article Geoff Humberstone writes: "Where to connect the leak detector is a tradeoff between sensitivity and low background. Connecting to the chamber will reduce sensitivity but will have the lowest background. Best sensitivity will be at the mechanical pump inlet, but the background will be the highest there. I generally use the blower inlet."

The article illustrates typical types of furnace systems that use diffusion pumps or blowers backed by mechanical pumps. It presents field-proven solutions that can aid locating difficult leaks using helium leak detection scales as low as 1.57 cc/year (a standard leak of 5X108 std. cc/sec). It shows multiple interactions and connections into the leak detector and system for optimum results.

Humberstone also discusses many issues and provides sage advice on how to start and isolate leaks from feedthroughs, door seals, viewports, switches and sensors and many places which are often overlooked and can result in many more hours of troubleshooting time.
