WINONA LAKE, Ind., Oct. 26, 2004 — It had to happen sooner or later. Heaven’s online – at least in one new novel written for young readers. Set for a November 1, 2004, release and being distributed nationally by FaithWorks, Kevin Scott Collier’s “” (Baker Trittin Press, ISBN 0975288024) tells the story of ten-year-old Jordon Mink and his new e-mail “pen pal:” an angel named Bartholomew Pennington.
Aimed at kids Baker Trittin Press calls tweeners – typically the eight- to twelve-year-olds who are constantly told they’re too old for some things and too young for others – “” is Collier’s first novel and kicks off Baker Trittin’s Tweener Press Fable Series.
The book was inspired by a question one student asked Collier, a newspaper art director and cartoonist who has taught story development and cartooning to students throughout west Michigan. “Do you pray to God?” the student asked.
“Actually,” Collier joked, “I e-mail him now.”
A few weeks later, Collier had begun his tale of modern-day angels who, in an effort to more closely resemble the mortals they walk among, use e-mail to communicate with Heaven. All goes well enough until angel Bartholomew Pennington accidentally sends an e-mail message to Jordon Mink. Not willing to risk being found out by other mortals, Bart agrees to become Jordon’s pen pal. But when Bart discovers Jordon is headed for tragedy, the tech-savvy angel takes it upon himself to find a miracle.
The book reads like an e-mail conversation back and forth between the friends. But anyone expecting this Christian novel to hit readers over the head with the Word of God will be disappointed: “,” like all Tweener Press books, instead uses strong, faith-based storytelling, plenty of compelling plot twists, and believable dialogue to engage its audience.
“Tweeners are kids struggling between ‘Don’t you see I need help?’ and ‘I can do it myself,’” explained Marvin G. Baker, Ed.D., co-founder and editor-in-chief of Baker Trittin Press. “Baker Trittin Press specializes in the tweener niche market. We believe parents and librarians are looking for books that are well written, appeal to both boys and girls, provide suspense, contain realistic dialogue, and are not preachy. The Tweener Press Fable Collection promises to be a fun, exciting addition to our Tweener Press Adventure Series and our Gospel Storyteller Series. We are pleased to be working with a talented author like Kevin Scott Collier as we launch this new line.”
