Guzzetta's Hand-crafted Silk Scarves Are Works of Art

Milwaukee artist Andrea Guzzetta is creating a new line of colorful garments that have meaning and value.

MILWAUKEE, April 16, 2014 /PRNewswire/ — Andrea Guzzetta, a Milwaukee artist, takes her art seriously – and personally. So when she sets out to handcraft a colorful silk scarf, it involves much more than just producing a garment.

The scarves are based on water color paintings she has fashioned over the past few years. "I'm interested in weaving all of those different ideas about who we are and where we come from into my art," said Guzzetta. "When someone else appreciates that art, I'm making a connection on a really personal level."

Her designs and paintings come from dreams and a personal mythology about life and death. "I believe that life and death are inexorably linked, and that each only has meaning because the other exists," explained Guzzetta. "I believe that each of us has many 'deaths' as we shed our old selves and become new people."

The designs for the scarves are drawn and transferred onto premium watercolor paper where they are painstakingly created in vibrant neon colors with watercolor paint, watercolor pencil and micron pens.

Guzzetta fully realizes that a scarf with a funky print can be purchased at a discount department store for $25. So why would anyone want to pay $100 for one of hers?

For starters, Guzzetta's scarves are built to last, using high-quality silk and a screen printing process that will maintain the bright neon colors for decades. "I want your grandchildren to be playing dress-up with this scarf," she said.

More importantly, though, they are true works of art. The designs mean something. "Their symbolism will make you feel powerful."

The cost to get two scarves into production is about $11,000 and Guzzetta has launched a Kickstarter campaign to generate funding for this project. So far, she has raised more than $3,000.

Depending on their donation levels, backers will receive greeting cards with Guzzetta's hand-crafted designs, watercolor sketches, her new scarves and watercolor paintings.

"I am making these scarves because I want to explore the mysteries of the world, and I want to share them with you," Guzzetta said. "My hope is that people will find meaning and value in what I have created."
