"At a time when Houston is finally getting the national recognition it deserves for its rich and vibrant arts and culinary offerings, we were excited to offer those gems in our community a well-deserved spotlight," said Chris Bilton, executive director of the GSMD. "This is one of many community engagement efforts we're planning to help our District join Houston as a celebrated destination and vibrant metropolitan marketplace."

The GSMD invited members in the culinary and cultural arts communities to participate in a contest that focused on what's unique about their business or organization and how it contributes to making the District shine! Out of dozens of submissions, eight winners were selected based on the uniqueness and importance of the product or service; its contribution to the vitality of the District; its enhancements of the lifestyle of residents; and ability to attract visitors and new residents to the area.

The winners include Lucille's, an upscale restaurant serving Southern comfort foods with European accents; Green Seed Vegan, a plant-based eatery and elixir bar; the Children's Museum of Houston, one of 190 museums for kids in the U.S.; Doshi House, an eclectic cafe and coffee house; Frenchy's, a fast casual kitchen serving Creole cooking; the Yoga House, a Kemetic yoga studio; the Reggae Hut, a Caribbean-style eatery; and Conscious Cafe, a cafe specializing in healthy and all-natural foods and beverages.

Representatives of community organizations in the District judged each contest entry based on creativity, originality and overall community enrichment. Eight winners were selected to be featured in a three-minute video, which aired at the Greater Southeast Management District's title sponsorship event, "Dancin' in the Street…Motown & More Revue" at Miller Outdoor Theatre to an estimated audience of more than 40,000.

The winners' video is also airing on the GSMD Channel on Houston's Voice, a Comcast-sponsored, community-driven, local video and interactive media network dedicated to supporting the community: http://www.houstonsvoice.com/video/spotlight-on-the-greater-southeast-management-district/.
